Enforcement Is Getting More Serious
This is not just theoretical risk. Both Singapore and Malaysian authorities have stepped up operations significantly.
The LTA has been intensifying patrols at tourist spots like Gardens by the Bay and Changi Airport, and during one operation on 5 August 2025, officers caught 19 unlicensed drivers in a single day. On the Malaysian side, the Road Transport Department launched a dedicated operation targeting vehicles without proper cross-border authorisation, seizing Singapore-registered vehicles and warning that operators face fines of up to MYR 50,000.
The penalties apply to the driver, but the disruption falls on the passenger. Your trip gets cancelled mid-route, your plans are derailed, and you have no recourse.
